Sandbox

The sandbox is Hedge’s staging environment, opened to developers. It runs the same API, MCP server and broker portal as production, against carriers’ test systems. The CLI and the MCP connector work there exactly as in production.

Sandbox Production
REST API https://sandbox-api.hedgespecialty.com/api/v1 https://api.hedgespecialty.com/api/v1
MCP connector https://sandbox-mcp.hedgespecialty.com/mcp https://mcp.hedgespecialty.com/mcp
Broker portal https://staging-brokers.hedgespecialty.com https://brokers.hedgespecialty.com
CLI hedge --sandbox ... hedge ...
  1. Ask your Hedge contact for a sandbox account. Hedge creates it for the email address you will sign in with. Say if you need submit access (create, answer, quote, bind link); reads work without it.

  2. Sign in to the sandbox broker portal with Google, or use Forgot password to set one.

  3. Create keys under Settings → API keys, then exchange them for a token at the sandbox host:

    Terminal window
    curl -X POST "https://sandbox-api.hedgespecialty.com/api/v1/oauth/token" \
    -H "Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded" \
    -d "grant_type=client_credentials" \
    -d "client_id=$HEDGE_CLIENT_ID" \
    -d "client_secret=$HEDGE_CLIENT_SECRET"

Or sign in with the CLI, which keeps a separate sign-in per environment:

    Terminal window
hedge --sandbox login # your own sign-in
hedge --sandbox login --client-id bac_... --client-secret bas_... # a key

To connect an AI tool, add the sandbox MCP connector (https://sandbox-mcp.hedgespecialty.com/mcp) and sign in with your sandbox account, as with the production connector.

Sandbox keys work only in the sandbox, and production keys do not work there. Writes made with a key name the producing broker with producer_email: use your own sign-in address.

  • Quotes. Instant-quote markets whose carrier runs a test system quote for real against it: Blitz, CFC, Coalition, Coterie, Cowbell, EMPLOYERS, LIO and NEC today. Prices, coverages and documents are what those test systems return. They are test quotes, never coverage.
  • The API, MCP server, webhooks and portal. Same code as production.
  • Other markets. Markets without a carrier test system do not appear in the sandbox, so appetite there can differ from production.
  • Carriers and underwriters. Nothing reaches a carrier’s production system or an underwriter.
  • Outbound messages. No texts are sent. The only thing that leaves the sandbox is email to your own sandbox users. Email to anyone else on a sandbox file, including an insured’s address, is dropped.

Switch the base URL (or drop --sandbox), create a production key, and ask Hedge to turn on submit access for your production brokerage if it is not on yet. Nothing else changes.
